Back on the road

Our last trip in the caravan was mid October, so it’s official…we are not winter caravanners!  We had a few weekends away over the winter, the best of which was a two night stay in an apartment in Grasmere, but it’s just not the same as being in the caravan.

So it was with a great sense of excitement that we set off for the Caravan Club site in Thurstaston.  We wanted somewhere close to home, expecting all sorts of problems with the caravan after the winter lay-off, but we needn’t have worried because everything worked fine.  A slight scare with the water heater drain plug, but it turned out it just wasn’t tightened enough.

New year, new curtains, nice latte coloured ones…but no pic to show them off…duh!

Friday

We visited this site last year (in very bad weather), so we knew there were about a dozen pitches with great views of the Dee estuary, and we wanted one.  We were optimistic because it was the first day the site was open, so we thought if we got there early we should be able to grab one.  Earliest arrival time midday, we got there at 1pm…too late.  According to the wardens they were queuing down the approach road when they opened the gates.

Oh well, we managed to find a nice quiet pitch.

Not a great day weatherwise, so we decided to drive to Heswall in search of cushions to match our new curtains.  Heswall is a nice town, but not the place to go cushion shopping.  Afterwards we went on to Parkgate for a quick drink in The Boathouse.

The Boathouse is a really nice pub and we decided to book a table for dinner later.  A table for four, because we were expecting visitors.  J’s cousin and his girlfriend…G and T.  They picked us up and then dropped us back at the site, so cheaper than a taxi!

Dinner was nice, if expensive!

Saturday

Today’s plan, a 6 mile walk from the site around Caldy and Thurstaston.

Not exactly a walk in the middle of nowhere, but a surprisingly nice walk in fabulous weather.

Thor’s rock, Thurstaston

Plenty of time for geocaching and we managed to find three out of five, which isn’t great but about average for us.  Here’s a pic of J not looking at all suspicious as she signs a log book!

Afterwards, dinner in the caravan and a quiet night in, reading and listening to music.

Sunday

Homeward bound.  A new pitch in the storage place, right next to the one we used to be in.

All in all, a good first trip of the year.  It’s great to be back on the road.

Coming soon…

A birthday treat for D…three nights at the Caravan Club site in Coniston, his favourite site at the moment.
