Ravenglass

14th to 17th May 2015

Ravenglass C&CC site.  Great location, quiet village with three nice pubs nearby, a bit of a beach, fabulous sunsets, good walking.  Ok, it takes a long time to get there, and the facilities are not the best, but it’s still our favourite site.

Thursday

A Thursday start for a change.  Three night trips for us are usually Fri-Mon but we thought we’d try something different this time.  The journey took about three hours with a quick stop for tea.

We got one of the pitches we asked for, so can’t complain, but it was a bit muddy at the back.   When sitting outside we like to hide away at the back of the pitch, but this time we had to move forward a bit due to the mud…although there wasn’t much sitting outside due to the extreme cold!

Popped into the village for a quick drink before heading back to the caravan for a very successful barbecue.  Then back to the village for a great sunset and more drinks.  There are three pubs in Ravenglass, The Ratty Arms, The Inn at Ravenglass and the Pennington Hotel.  They are all nice, but the Inn at Ravenglass overlooks the estuary so maybe has a slight edge.

Friday

A short drive to the foot of the Hardknott pass, to tackle the summit of the same name.  549 metres, about 7 miles.

Blue skies to start, but it quickly clouded over, making us question our decision to leave the waterproof coats in the car!  The search is on for very lightweight, packable waterproof coats for under £50.

A lot of this walk was off path, so plenty of opportunity to get lost.  We didn’t, thanks to our GPS and a few easily spottable landmarks on the way.  We managed to miss the Eskdale needle, though, which we wanted to see.  Great views of neighbouring, higher, fells, including Scafell, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags.

Stopped off in Boot on the way back for a pint for D and tea and a cake for J.  The Brook House Inn is still one of our favourite pubs anywhere.

It started raining soon after we got back to the site, but we’d previously booked a table at the Ratty Arms, so we had to venture out.  Not a nice night, but we had lovely salads in the pub, mixed seafood for D and mixed meats for J.

Saturday

A day trip by train/bus to Barrow-in-Furness, primarily to visit Piel Island.

IMG_0086

Piel Island lies half a mile (1 km) off the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula in the administrative county of Cumbria, though historically within Lancashire north of the sands. It is one of the Islands of Furness. It is the location of the English Heritage-owned Piel Castle.

The island is within the administrative boundaries of the mainland town of Barrow-in-Furness and is owned by the people of the town, having been given by the Duke of Buccleuch in the early 20th century. The Borough Council's administrative duties also include the selection of the "King" of Piel, who is the landlord of the island's public house, the Ship Inn. The area of Piel is about 50 acres (20 ha). As well as the landlord and his family the island has three other permanent residents who live in the old Pilots Cottages.

We had to wait ages for the ferry and almost gave up, but it was worth the wait for the ferry journey alone.

The “king” allows free camping anywhere on the island, but the facilities are pretty poor, so it’s not somewhere we are likely to stay!!

Had a quick look around Barrow town centre too, and picked up a book of barbecue ideas from a charity shop.  We are looking forward to our next one!

We ate in the caravan, then headed into the village for another great sunset and a pint in each of the pubs.

Sunday

The downside to this site is the long journey, so we left early and got home just after midday.

Coming soon…

Nothing for a couple of weeks, then somewhere in Yorkshire we think.

Shrewsbury

8th to 10th May 2015

We’re back, after a break of a couple of weeks during which time we went on holiday to Fuerteventura.  We stayed in Corralejo, in a nice villa overlooking the beach, great weather, blue skies…none of that this weekend.  Well, we did see a bit of blue sky.

Oxon touring park, just outside Shrewsbury, a site we have visited a couple of times before.

Friday

We were a bit disorganized this time, due to D staying up all night watching the election results, but we still managed to arrive before 1pm.  Just about managed to make it to the nearby Co-op for supplies before it started to rain.  The rest of the day was a washout and we just relaxed inside the caravan.

Saturday

Better weather today, even a bit of blue sky, so we headed for The Wrekin (407 metres), near Telford.  D very disappointed that OS Get A Map software has changed, not for the better, so not as tidy a route pic as previously.

Untitled

This is a popular place but we managed to avoid the crowds by taking an indirect, very steep in places, approach to the summit.  It was busy at the top, and windy, but great views.

Managed to find three out of four geo-caches, which is pretty good going for us.  There were just too many people around to get the last one.

In the afternoon we got a bus into Shrewsbury and walked along the river, before dinner and a few drinks in the town centre.

Sunday

Up early and a good journey home.  The Archers and Bradley Wiggins on Desert Island Discs.

Coming soon…

Three nights in Ravenglass.
